Mark Borthwick

I find Mark Borthwick's style of photography so romantic.
It is described as avante garde fashion photography, but I think some of his photo's are more natural than that, more spontaneous holiday snaps gone wrong in the right way.
Apparently he opens the back of the camera at random times for a split second to expose the film momentarily, that's what makes the beautiful colours.
They are majorly pretty. And he's done ones of my new obsession Chloe Sevigny.

Broadcast

A friend just told me about this band, and I like them.
They are playing the Matt Groening ATP this month, wish I was going so much, the lineup is really good.

Major dislike

The film Mulholland Drive, fucking hated it .

Chris Morris

Chris Morris is very very very good, I remember watching Brasseye when I was really young and feeling guilty because it had swearing and my mum didn't know I was watching it. What a series.
Anyway Four Lions is brilliant (wasn't expecting anything else really) and everyone should see it.

1940's women's advertising

About a year ago I found this book in a charity shop in Stoke for five pounds, but I didn't get it. Then a friend surprised me with it as a present. It is a hand made book made of a collection of Woman's Journal from 1946-1947.
There's no clue who put it together but it's full of short stories, fashion and adverts aimed at women.
It's so bizarre looking at the concepts that were once used to sell things, some of them are shocking in the way women are portrayed but also funny from a modern perspective.
I'm quite happy things have changed now, Stoke has good charity shops and I have good friends....

Anyway I HAD to scan these in

Sewing is cool

I randomly found a artist who creates hand stitched typography. She has done loads of stuff for magazines and all her work is really impressive, the work I like best is where there is a colour halftone style.
This is really similar to some work I did at uni before I finished, I wish I'd have seen her work before it would have made great research, but it puts mine to shame.

Dinosaur Jr.

I'm off to see Dinosaur Jr. on Sunday at Liverpool O2 Academy and I'm very excited. It's been nice to see some of the posters around town with he artwork of Marq Spusta on it. He is responsible for the artwork on the cover of Dinosaur's latest album Farm and it is very pretty.

Sometimes I go on this...

The Fall

I'm reading The Fall or 'La Chute' by Albert Camus, one of my favourite authors. It's written like a spoken monologue, as though we are a new companion of the reader as Jean-Baptiste Clamence tells us of his personal revelations and how he became 'judge penitent' and I'm guessing his eventual 'fall'. Not sure if it's were the band got their name from but it's so well written, Albert Camus was an amazing writer and everyone should read at least some of his work, there isn't that much as he died in a car accident when he was 46.

Tavis Coburn

Tavis Coburn is a massively famous illustrator, just going on his website shows the amount of work he gets commissioned. His style is a bit bright for me but it's interesting to see what methods he uses, in Illustration Now it lists that he uses a photocopier, scanner, mesh silk screens and his computer.

Tara McPherson

Recently bought " Lonely Heart the art of Tara McPherson". Her work is really beautiful, I love the way she draws. The book is actually a really good way of looking at this as it includes clear pages which show the transition from sketch, graphite drawing and screen print. I think the graphite pencil is what makes the pieces, the lines are sharp and clear yet they have texture. I first saw her real silk screen printed work in The Richard Goodall Gallery in Manchester, which is an amazing little shop/gallery full of toys and original screen printed band posters. It's near Afflecks Palace in the Northern Quarter, so anyone in Manchester should go.

The clear pages in the book
